Breeders' Cup 2016
With the Triple Crown over for another year and the summer and fall racing season in full swing, the eyes of the racing world are now turning to the Breeders' Cup Championships, the premier year-end event in America for the Thoroughbred racing industry.
The Breeders' Cup is a series of nine races run over two days on the first weekend of November each year and has some of the most lucrative races in the world. Any horse that wins a Breeders' Cup race has major bragging rights, skyrocketing stud fees and gets to parade around in that pretty purple flower blanket. Because, you know... flowers.
We’ve had a brilliant run in our last four Breeders' Cups and I could not be more excited to bring it back again in 2016. While we have had many of our great winners and champions retired, there are some new horses I've been watching on the scene and I dearly hope that they will participate this year! We can't let those old timers keep taking all the glory, can we?
Here is a list of the SS Breeder's Cup events (no particular order):
Breeder’s Cup Classic - 10F Dirt
Breeder’s Cup Distaff - 9F Dirt
Breeder’s Cup Marathon - 15F Turf
Breeder’s Cup Turf - 12F Turf
Breeder’s Cup Filly & Mare Turf - 10F Turf
Breeder’s Cup Mile - 8F Turf
Breeder’s Cup Dirt Mile - 8F Dirt
Breeder’s Cup Sprint - 7F Dirt
Breeder’s Cup Turf Sprint - 7F Turf
Each race is open to any level of racehorse on SS, from Open Level to Grade I, so as any level of horse can compete to give everyone a chance to run.
Horses with higher stats will again be given heavier imposts to help level the playing field, while Open Level horses will be given a break in weights. This is similar to the weight for age scheme that is used in the actual races.
The weight system is as follows:
Open Level/Under 70 GIII: 114 lbs
Grade III: 120 lbs
Grade II: 125 lbs
Grade I: 130 lbs
Point System
Starting with the next round of races, EVERY STAKES RACE I RUN ON SS will have points counting toward the Breeder’s Cup. Instead of a monetary entry fee, you’ll have to pay however many points that race costs and deduct that amount from your horse’s total point count. I will keep a running tally on the racing board, but be sure to keep your own tallies as well in case I suck at counting. I mean, this is me we’re talking about… ain’t nobody got no time for that!
PLEASE NOTE: Allowance races and maiden special weights will not count toward point totals. Only stakes and handicaps from Open Level to Grade I will count toward point totals, so please keep that in mind when tallying your points!
If you are also a raceholder and would like to add these points to your races, please feel free!. Just make sure it's clearly marked whether or not you are also going to be using the points, so there's no confusion.
Here are the point totals:
1st – 5pts
2nd – 4 pts
3rd – 3 pts
4th – 14th – 2 pts
Entry Numbers
Pretty much like the rest of the races I run here, I’m going to be limiting 3 horses per trainer to enter into each qualifying race and each Breeder’s Cup race. Don't be that guy and keep throwing ponies in the gate hoping they'll stick. Or run first. Whichever.
Each race will be limited to 14 starters on both turf and dirt. A minimum of 6 is required to run any race, so as long as I have 6 horses per race on closing day, each will be run on November 4th and 5th.
I will also be filming these races and posting them on our racing YouTube channel! All of the preps will also be filmed and posted, so we'll have a nice 2016 sequence for us to nostalgia over. www.youtube.com/channel/UC_oiBfxj_ZmzqK_Q-vyHBLw
Win and You’re In
The same as previous years, we will have a number of "Win and You're In" races where the winning horse automatically qualifies for one of the Breeder's Cup races. There will be four chances per race for your horse to qualify - once your horse qualifies, you do not have to pay points to enter that race. Hooray!
You may qualify only ONCE for each race of your choice – BUT you may enter the same horse in several different BC races! The beauty of pixels!
Below is the list of preps and their closing dates, so please be aware and keep an eye out for them.
Enjoy the season of preps and good luck to all entering!
