Two weeks ago, Horus bulled his way up the rail to strike for the wire first in the Kentucky Derby, holding off graded stakes winner Heathen and Kentucky Oaks winner Coco to cement his place in the history books. Upholding family tradition, Horus is the third Kentucky Derby of his sire line - but can he be the first Preakness winner? No one in his family has won the Preakness, much less the Triple Crown, and the statuesque bay colt will have his hooves full as we move our tack to Pimlico for the second jewel of the coveted Triple Crown!

Call
Two weeks ago, Horus delivered a powerhouse performance, rallying from off the pace and turning back the determined challenges of Heathen and Coco to strike for the wire first in a thrilling finish. Today, the imposing bay champion is back, this time to land the second jewel of the Triple Crown, and against foes that have now been tempered in the Olympic crucible - and could prove to be his downfall.
Horus is the obvious favorite today, but not by much, and he'll have to break clean and break fast to get himself in good position to put himself in the running for history. Oaks winner Coco is right on his heels and will be right there with him on the lead, as a clear run is what this filly loves - and what makes her the most dangerous. Cahokia Sky will share second choice with her after a good showing in the Derby, closing well to miss only by two lengths and showing a good kick in the final furlong. Derby runner-up Heathen figures to be another speed horse and while he has shown he hasn't needed the lead, he does his best running on it, if he can get free and clear. Late-running Yokai has been a ghost in this series, popping up when he's least expected, running fourth in the Derby and in good position to take on the leaders if a pace duel manifests up front. Stablemates Girl Gone Wild and Cancer are both higher odds today, with Girl Gone Wild showing an extremely good kick after running third in both the Oaks and the Black-Eyed Susan, while Cancer will be on the front end to make life difficult for everyone with his quick breaks and blazing speed. We jump to double digits with Checkers and Mary Lou, both horses that have shown some promise elsewhere but have come up short in the American Classics series. Thistle, winner of the 1000 Guineas, has done well for herself on turf, but needs to show more against colts on either surface to make an impact. Longshot Riot is a come from behind horse that can take the kick back, but hasn't shown the grit needed to get a piece of the Classic action. And Gracie, the biggest longshot in Preakness history, may not have a chance at all after coming up short in her Olympic trials.
Despite rain during the week, the weather is kind today, with sunlight in spades and a brisk wind blowing off the ocean to the east to send our colts and fillies streaming onto the track in a glittering parade. History could be in the making as Horus looks to add the Preakness to his already impressive resume - but he has 11 other horses to get through, including several champions and Classic winners, before we can truly call him immortal.
