It IS possible and I've actually done that to a few different mods. However, I have not 'released' any files where I just did some minor tweaks on someone else's mod since that's probably not a very nice thing to do and in fact, unless you have permission, hexing on someone else's mod is kind-of ~taboo. Rafa and Haubing are really cool about sharing and letting other people modify/fix/do whatever with their mods so I might release the level pony I did off of Haubing's mod in the future. Mak has said she doesn't mind minor customizationon hers as long as everyone knows it's her mod to start with, although her mods are pretty distinctive so everyone would probably know just from looking at it anyway. Nobody has asked me, but I'm cool with people modifying mine as long as it's more for like personal use. Like you can't go change the forelock and mane and then turn around and call it YOUR Thoroughbred and put it up for download. Cuz that wouldn't be cool.
That said, getting a mod level when it's not currently can be a major pain. It all depends on what made it unlevel in the first place really, and only the original hexer would know for sure what they did. You'd need to look in several areas of LNZ and compare them to a regular file. Each one can be unlevel for a different reason. A lot of Mak's unlevel mods are from moving the chest ball in the "move" section in LNZ. So, if you move the chest ball, a lot of addballs and balls base their xyz coords off of it, so they move too! So, like on the QH and Pleasure Horse, she moved the chest ball. If I remember right, everything in the Manda v2 file except the back legs and hind end is based on the chest ball, so everything moved but the butt and back legs (so now the front legs don't match the back). If you put the chest ball back in its original location, the legs would be level but now it looks like a mutant. You'd have to then raise up a lot of the addballs and balls to try to get it looking like it should, so the topline and everything is relatively the same as it was. It's not fun, and it's all done in LNZ by changing the xyz coords and then opening Petz to see if the file even still works and if you're making any progress.
Other mods might be more simple, like if someone just fiddled around in the "leg extension" section and you can correct that and everything is fine. With mods with stacked legs, most likely the knee(s) were moved in the "move" section and each back leg is based on its corresponding knee, so the hoof moves with the knee. A lot of times with the stacked mods you might just be able to move both knees up a little bit and maybe the right knee up a bit more, and that might still look okay so you won't have to go in and change too much else. Or, you can lower the chest ball to pull the front legs (and the whole front end) down and then try to get the topline back how it's supposed to look.
I want to stress that ALL of this is done in LNZ moving the coords, so you're going to have to get really comfortable with that. These days, I actually do most of my hexing straight in LNZ, even adding paintballs, because once you know how, it's just easier to do that than to use PW and copy/paste and then fiddle with it in LNZ cuz it doesn't look right anyway.
Thank you! I want to make a custom hex of my heart horse, who has lordosis, just for personal use & i thought it would be good practice using LNZ but once i get started on his back I'm sure it will mess up his legs/stance too.
With the Manda v2 files, as long as you stick to moving addballs, you really can't screw up the levelness unless you're trying to, like if you move hoof/leg addballs.
You can make the topline appear whichever way you want since it's all addballs, but there's only like 5 balls for the entire topline (withers, two large back/belly balls, croup shaper, and butt shaper) and some double as a belly too so you can't get too crazy with those. Depending on how exactly you want it to look, it might be more complicated or it might be really straightforward.
Also, if you end up having issues or just can't seem to get it, I'd be happy to help, or hex the mod myself if you've got pictures!
Jewellz if you have time, id really appreciate it! Ideally id be able to show him here too, but if nothing else id be happy to have him just to play with in the game. I'll email you some pictures & you can let me know if its something you want to take on.
valeera okay cool! Just had a look and he's a cutie! What's his breed? He seems a bit like a QH to me but I'm definitely not an expert lol. I might be able to just tweak an existing mod to look a little more like him. Did you have any in mind? I think there's a few out there that look pretty close already but I can also start from scratch on the original 1a too... Would you want his neck to be lower, like on Mak's and Rafa's QH mods? Or maybe a little higher like on my TB, or more regular-high style like most files?
I think the neck needs to be lower, he carries it low naturally, unless he's being hot, then he's a giraffe. He's APHA, (Paint), his daddy was a gorgeous palamino overo and his momma was a sorrel overo, poor boo wound up with no color and congenital lordosis. He's perfect to me anyway! I don't mind if you start from scratch or go with a pre-existing mod, whatever works best for you. I found some better pics from last winter, so i'll email those too.
Yeah it looked lower in the first couple pics so I'm glad I asked!
What do you think about Mak's Paint mod? I've hotlinked an image from Neco below sshhh. The file is really unlevel but I might be able to fix that. Almost all lowered-neck mods that exist are unlevel except Rafa's QH. I could also see what I can do about the tail and mane if you wanted a more natural style.
AND here is Rafa's QH:
And I tend to think this QH's head is a bit ~chunky so, if you wanted, I could mess with a bit...And after looking at the additional images (they're great!) I think this one's neck is too thin & curvy so I could try to address that as well...And give a normal tail if you wanted.
There are also one or two more existing mods that might work but I don't have pics atm so I can maybe post those later if you're not feeling either of those two. Or I can start fresh on a new mod and see what happens! ... I might be able to just use my TB v2 (below) and mod it more. I could lower the neck a bit more if you think it needs it, maybe give the head a bit more of a wedge shape...Obviously do what I can with the back...
Let me know what you think! I can probably easily work with any of these three, the hardest would be trying to get Mak's mod level. Mostly, I'm just interested in what you think of the overall size/shape of them, their necks, and anything besides the back and forelock you would want changed. School is over for me May 3rd so I might be kinda slow to start on it but it shouldn't take too long to finish.
Looking at these, the Rafa QH I agree - the neck is far too arched and the bottom of the face needs moving up a few notches. I feel like it has more of a Cob-type look to it at the moment - but the body is spot on.
The back legs on the Mak's QH aren't right. I feel like there's something that stopped Mak fixing that - if it were my file I wouldn't have released it like that unless we were talking a good few days working around something. And you say it will be the hardest, soooo... Also the bottom row of addballs on the hooves could do with lines?
Your V2 thoroughbred I love the body, I think you've nailed the neck, but I agree perhaps the head could be a bit more "lunky." I also think perhaps the withers could do with moving up.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices some of those things!
Unfortunately, you can't really add more lines to any Manda v2 files since they're at the line limit, unless you take some away from the mane or something. I think Mak's hoof balls just got sized down a tad and that's why the hooves look a bit broken but I haven't actually gone investigating yet.
Well, Barry's head IS a big blocky head, I have to buy warmblood, sometimes draft, halters for his noggin. So I feel like the Rafa qh is pretty close there, except the neck isnt right, like you said, the neck would be closer to your TB mod. The lower tailset on rafa's matches Barry fairly well too, though I think that may change when you start on his back. I think a mashup of your TB/rafas qh would probably bring it all together - but how much of a pain is it to do? Basically I trust you, so whatever you find works best i'm good with! no rush on time, if I were attempting this on my own i'm sure it would take me like 3 months! I'm not a fan of Mak's Paint mod, so scratch that one especially if it means more work for you.
valeera I've been super stressed lately so I already got started (and that last picture you sent is really helpful!). Modding is really relaxing for me. You change one thing and instant results! So satisfying...
Anyway, I'm going to make a stock horse mod that'll work for Paints, Appys, QHs etc. cuz I was planning to do another mod for the summer rodeo thing (even if it's not a forum event and it's just something I host myself) and THEN I'll work on customizing the back and anything else to be like Barry, if that sounds fine?
Sooo here's the WIP so far:
I DID lower the neck a bit more from my TB, it's got a beefier head and back end, more muscle-y legs, a bit rounder body and a little more sway in its back (though not quite Barry-level yet). The forelock and forehead are the greatest pain so far but that forelock is kinda cute and inspired by Barry haha. I think the forelock needs a bit more fiddling still (not sure I like the third shorter strand that's closest to the eye, maybe it needs sized down or moved, or removed) and maybe the face too. It's really hard to get a nice straight forehead but I think it's close...It still just looks kinda curved inward up at the top in some angles more than others.
I am aware it might be a slight downhill conformation (depending on where you think the top of the withers are) BUT I think that's pretty typical for this type? I can always just move all the hind end stuff a tad lower so it's more even, or raise the withers a bit.
But I'd like your thoughts on the WIP - keeping in mind it's not Barry yet but more of a general Western-y mod and I'll be customizing it more just for Barry afterwards. Though he did inspire a lot of it so far!
alice too and anyone else, anything you see? I'm uploading this to the SS site for everyone so I'd like it to be nicely polished. There are limitations in the file but I can do what I can lol
