This thread is gonna fill up so fast with pictures...
Pup is growing quick! Although the last few days I've been a little worried because his weight gain per day decreased a little, for instance, he was gaining about 1-1.5oz every 24 hours-ish and then he dropped down to gaining just .8oz or .5 oz, but today I weighed him and he's up 1.4oz from yesterday so no cause for concern yet, just gonna have to wait and see. Every time he makes a noise I worry it's because he's hungry. Usually if the mom has problems not making enough milk (and KitKat seems to be pretty low, but I'm not an expert) they will happen around the 2-3 weeks because growing puppies need more. But after he hits 3 weeks (this Thursday) I'll start trying to introduce some formula/canned food mixture for him to start transitioning from milk.
But yeah, here's some pictures from the past week or so!
March 25th: We have a kitten toy that instead of squeaking it has a voice box and goes "mew mew mew" when squeezed. It rarely goes off because our dogs (including KitKat) don't have big enough/strong enough mouths to set it off. However, I stepped on it in the hallway as I was letting KitKat out one morning. When I got to the back door, she was no longer following me. She'd snatched up the kitten and was frantically trying to take it back to her box haha. So now the kitten has been adopted! She would move the kitten around to sit next to the pup and her.
April 2nd: He lays in the strangest positions sometimes... We bought a puppy playpen right after he was born because KitKat really likes being with us and we wanted something that could move around with us into either the office or the living room for daytime use and we could just have her box and pen setup in the bedroom stay put. It will also be useful once the pup is more mobile to help contain him but still have him nearby.
April 3rd: We still have to move the kitten toy when we move the pup to the playpen, but it mostly just sits off to the side next to the bed, she isn't quite as motherly with it as she was.
April 4th: This was yesterday! His ears are changing and getting bigger and more floppy. I can't wait to see what they do as he grows up
That puppy must be part husky, because Kitta would sleep like that ALL the time and I could never figure out how that could ever be comfortable haha. She'd even do it in her crate with her face smooshed up against the side, that weirdo.
Ughhh he's sooo cuuuute. Two week old puppy sausage rolls are my favorite sausage rolls ;-; I have a feeling he's gonna be bigger than momma if he keeps growing like he is.
Could be genetic! KitKat likes laying on her back sometimes too haha. I think this was definitely her first litter because she's so young her teeth look perfect and new and, as her hormones die down, she's basically becoming a puppy herself - ball of energy that always wants to play. I kind of miss the old pregnant gal who moved slow and napped all day - that's what my other dogs do haha, we have two seniors and then Regen who is almost 3, but Regen is lazy and just cool with whatever.
KitKat in a relaxing pose:
Below is a bonus photo of Regen laying in her cushy heated bed under my desk, she's there 90% of the time that I'm on the computer. She's ALWAYS bent her neck at such angles that it freaks me out, like on the 13-hour car ride home with her when she was 9 weeks old, she kept raising her head up so she could use HER OWN BACK as a pillow, I was terrified of hitting any bumps when she did that. Someday I'll compile a bunch of pictures of her weird sleeping habits haha.
^ I was honestly scared to move from my desk because I had no idea how she would get up without breaking her freaking neck (when she finally got up, she rolled her body and legs under her and her head stayed where it was...)
Now for puppy pictures! The little guy is exactly a month old today, and about 4 and a half weeks. Honestly, I haven't been taking as many photos the past week or so because his eyes opened and I know they're supposed to be blue and cloudy, but it's freaky looking. And now that they've been open more than a week, I'm starting to wonder if maybe there is something wrong because I've seen pics of other 3-4 week old puppies and their eyes aren't as light or cloudy. However, he can clearly still see and they have darkened a bit since they first opened. Still, I want the shelter's vet to look at them so I'm going to get them to get me an appointment this week.
^ He really likes the kitten toy! He's been chewing on his ears and feet (the tail was long gone - Regen 'docked' it) because he's got his puppy teeth coming in and he's also more awake and playful so he tackles the kitty and rolls around with it.
^ The first clearest picture I could get of his eyes fully opened - this was taken 10 days ago and the light is flattering, they were a bit lighter than that.
^ This was yesterday. When it's not direct light, his eyes look a lot better. I'm hoping it's just me being paranoid and his eyes are fine. He's doing good eating the canned food. KitKat is still letting him nurse even though she doesn't have a lot of milk coming in, but I expect soon she won't, because he's got some sharp little teeth now! Today, I'm going to start moistening some kibble with puppy formula and mixing his canned food with that to get him used to chunks and chewing his food. Edit: They had a vet take a look and his eyes are "definitely not normal" but they don't know what is wrong. He seems like he can see but "probably not as well as he should" - I'm really sad I didn't take him in sooner to get checked now, but they said to just keep doing what I'm doing and they'll do some research and try to get ahold of an ophthalmologist to virtually consult or actually see him. The nearest one is probably at least 3 hours away though. Meanwhile, he's still the same lovebug that needs food, cuddles, and playtime so I'm trying not to let this get me too down.

OMG you guys he's changing colors! His black is almost gone, it looks like it all just up and decided to leave via his tail because only about the last 2/3 of his tail has black hairs mixed in these days (and I suspect soon he won't even have those). The cream points he has (like KitKat's) are still there but without the black they're not nearly as noticeable.
I haven't been taking as many pictures because I've been really busy working almost every weekday in the office and the little guy has learned how to run really well, so he now has only two speeds: stopped and running full speed. He only stops for food, sleep, or to chew on something and it's usually not one of the 30 TOYS we have, but a cord or a shoe, or someone's foot, so I don't stop to take a picture of that haha.
Still nobody knows what's going on with his eyes but it's most likely genetic, he was born like that and will always have the hazy blue look to his eyes. I'm taking him in Tuesday for vaccines and they're going to look at them again, but unless my husband and I want to drive him to Denver (which is over 3 hours away) and pay for a veterinary ophthalmologist ourselves, I don't think he'll ever have a real diagnosis. We might decide to do that though. Husband wants to keep him, so that's what we'll do if the shelter will let us adopt him. Idk why they wouldn't let us, but this whole fostering thing has not turned out the way we planned so I'm not planning anything anymore. Not even gonna name him until I know for sure he's staying. He comes really well when you call "puppy!" and make kissy noises though.
Pictures from the past couple weeks - color changing!:
This was just this morning, cuddling with mom. You can kinda see how his tail is darker:
He spends the nights in the wire pen in our bedroom with mom and during the day he's in the black playpen in our office when I'm not home and sometimes when I am. We don't put KitKat in there with him unless nobody is home. We have him out loose in the house a lot and if he gets tired sometimes he will go and jump up on and scratch at the playpen wanting to get in to his bed, it's pretty adorable. I've never seen a dog so happy to go to bed.
We officially adopted Ajax! My husband got to pick his name because that was our deal. But I get to pick the name of our next dog, whenever we get another one... I just call him Jax mostly, and I told my husband his alternate name is Jack Snow... Because I'm constantly saying "Jax no" hahaha
We ALMOST kept KitKat too but I decided to take some pictures of her for the shelter to post on Facebook and if we didn't get her adopted with those then she would stay with us, but a lovely lady contacted them right away and wanted to meet her and she took her home. At first she thought it wasn't going to work out because KitKat shut down and was super shy and sad but she gave her a few days and now in almost 3 weeks of being in her new home she's acting almost the same as she was with us at our house, so she's transitioning much faster.
The lady only lives like 3 blocks away from me too, so I'm hoping to see KitKat again but for right now, I don't want to confuse her and mess up her transition so I'm just texting with the lady occasionally to answer her questions and celebrate the baby steps. I miss her a bunch, but she's bringing her new family lots of love. This lady's husband has advanced cancer and is in hospice care at home (which means he is just being kept comfortable until it's time) and KitKat immediately was comfortable with him. She jumps up on his hospital bed and sleeps with him and cuddles with him during the day, he's enjoying it.
Anyway, both of Ajax's eyes have gotten slightly better with their cloudiness, his left eye is better than his right. He seems to be able to see almost normally, but he does look funny and strangers give him looks or ask about his eyes when they see him. Right now his legs/paws/ears are BIG compared to the rest of him, so I think he has some filling out to do! Here's a couple pics from the last update to recent-ish...
The black hairs on his tail never did go away, I keep wondering if they will or if they're staying haha
Please excuse the dog hair all over the place lol
I'm hoping to get him enrolled in a puppy obedience class soon, but COVID-19 isn't really helping - the one class I did find was full. I'm just worried that he's going to grow up with bad manners because he had no littermates and not much socialization besides with KitKat and our other dogs.
okay, he is a GIANT now & super adorable! I love him. I have the same problem with puppy classes here too, now my puppy is over a year old i feel like we're so behind the ball here! I'm sure they'll make up for it later.
