It's the first Friday in May and that means the Kentucky Oaks is finally here! With moderate fields going to the post this year, it has nonetheless proven to be an exciting ride as these 13 fillies look to emulate the fiery run of Heretic Queen in 2018. This is the ultimate test for 3 year old dirt fillies in the country, and it's been a battle of the titans as the regally bred Elysium and Illicit have traded blows throughout the prep season. With the big race finally here, will it be one of these two fillies or another of the top sophomore distaffers entered in the race? It all comes down to talent and heart in a stellar field that has assembled for this year's Kentucky Oaks.

Call
It's the first Friday in May and the rain that has occluded Louisville all morning has finally steamed into the distance and left the skies cloudy and the track fast for the Kentucky Oaks. Steward scratches have reduced the race to only seven fillies, but what a field it is, loaded with hot talent and the culmination of an epic clash between two of the most talented fillies the forum has ever seen.
Rhapsody's sparkling powerhouse Illicit leads the way in favoritism, after notching the final two wins on both the Oaks and Derby trail to stand head and shoulders above the rest. However, she's finally forced to share top billing with Hard Tack's Elysium, second to Illicit in both her last starts, but able to give as she good as she can take, with both fillies trading blows throughout the spring. Lark isn't far behind after several good placings in stakes company, while stablemate Djinn will be fourth choice despite a hard-charging victory in her last outing. Noble Hierarch will sit as the fifth choice on perhaps her least favorite track, but she's still willing to put in an effort on the dirt as a prelude to the turf classics coming soon. Wildbird will be the first of her barn to make an Oaks appearance, and despite her longshot odds, this impeccably bred filly has shown fire and talent in all of her previous races. Elixir is the longest odds on the board and the front running filly hasn't had the best of trips so far in her short career, but may be a speed factor to try and burn out the favorites to set it for herself at the end.
The clouds are still hanging heavy over the twin spires of Churchill Downs, but for these seven fillies, the weather isn't even a blip on their radar as they tack to the track for their ultimate goal - a cornation of lillies.
