It's the first Saturday (just pretend) in May and that means the Kentucky Derby is finally here! With a fairly split field of 12 of colts and fillies, it's a spectacular group that will battle it out for this year's coveted prize of the Triple Crown. It's been the season of the filly as the top two fillies from the Oaks have been trading blows on the Derby Trail in an effort to make history as the first female to win the Derby. Damask so far has been the only colt to win a prep on the Derby trail and is looking to snatch that chance away from them after Pagan's 2018 sweep. It'll be a near full field once again for this year's renewal, and the implications for this year's Triple Crown are enormous as it all comes down to the wire.

Call
It's the first Saturday in May and the track is a quagmire as the torrential rains have slammed this track in the last few hours for the second in a year. 7 soggy sophmore colts and fillies are lined up for this year's Kentucky Derby, and it is a race loaded with historic implications as two titanic fillies clash for the Roses.
Rhapsody's Illicit is the narrowest of favorites today, and while she failed to fire in the Oaks, the bay daughter of Chaos is looking to live up to her sire's name and cause some trouble of her own in the Derby. Elysium will be hot on her heels and fresh off an Oaks triumph, looking to make it a historic and seemingly impossible double if she can fend off Illicit's late rush. General Disarray is tied for second choice after a good runner up finish in the 1000 Guineas, and the full brother to Illicit will look to make good on the talent he flashed on the turf. The elegant Damask is another looming threat for our top fillies, as he is the only colt that has own a Derby prep this year and he has shown he can win in the slop after several graded scores in a quagmire. Lani will be right behind him, in the betting and the field, as the late-running grey ghost will try to make good on his own talent that won him his last outing in graded company. Djinn, half sister to Elysium, will be looking to improve on her third place Oaks finish, and she figures to have a strong chance in the mud as both sire and dam scored big in the slop. Draconis is the longest shot on the board and despite scoring several front running victories, the dark son of Warlord may be in over his head as he jumps into the deep end for a chance at Derby glory.
The rain shows no signs of abating as the horses load into the gate, and the track is sloppy as they come, but with a number of horses already sporting wins after off going, it should be no damper on the day's activities as the field of 7 hits the track for this year's Kentucky Derby!
