Race Replay
Last week, the turf superstar Lustre powered to his second BC berth, scoring his shot in the Turf Sprint in record-setting time over Shizuka by open lengths. Today, only five of his rivals return for a 6 furlong dash as we take to the Santa Anita downhill course for this year's California Flag!
Rhapsody's War Hero will lead the way, as the only entrant from the high-flying stable that's a proven short-term sprinter. The red son of Warlord will look to emulate his father by earning his own spot in the Turf Sprint, a race his sire won in 2016. Shizuka will be hot on his heels after two good second place finishes last time in our BC preps, and she's just knocking on the door for a winner's circle appearance. Chihenne is third choice today in the betting despite her off the board performances last out, but six furlongs is right in this brindled mare's wheelhouse and a distance she's relished in prior races. Palenque will be up on the front end with War Hero but six furlongs may be too short for this filly looking to make her name in the big grass races. Sagittarius rounds out this field of turf sprinters today, and this dead closer of a mare will be counting on a hot pace up front in order to unleash that devastating turn of foot she's flashed in other non-BC races.
The first frost of the year has gilded the turf course silver in the morning but the sun is now shining and setting our horses gleaming like diamonds. It's six to take to the turf here today but only one will end up in the winner's circle for that coveted free spot in the Breeders' Cup. It's gates closed for this year's California Flag Handicap!
