Last week Acrimony completed a Hard Tack trifecta in the Corinthian, outsaying her longshot of a stablemate Bad Wolf to seal the deal for her trip to the BC Dirt Mile. Today, six more horses will vie for the very last spot available in our Breeders' Cup challenge series as we line them up in the Coaltown!
Hard Tack's Baldur leads the parade today and is looking for a second trip to the BC after qualifying for the Sprint, with hope that the extra furlong will carry his frontrunning speed. Rhapsody's Shared Belief in turn is looking for a whole lotta luck after finishing last of all last out, though he has come close several times in both the Sprint and Dirt Mile qualifiers. General Disarray comes off a respectable third last out and a cutback in distance seems to be the preference for this head-scratcher of a colt after a totally lackluster TC campaign earlier in the year. 2017 Triple Tiara winner Songbird will look for another BC race to conquer after running in the Classic preps and with only one other speed horse to contend with, she's got the potential for a mild upset. Mesmerize will look to add to her BC resume after qualifying for the Distaff and at only a mile, the shorter distance may enhance this filly's closing kick with a vengeance. Bad Wolf is the longest shot of all again, who after qualifying for the Sprint, has shown only fits and starts of the talent that got him to that winner's circle.
The curtain is closing on this year's Breeders' Cup Challenge series, with only one free spot left to win for our last few races. With six horses ready to go under clear but cold skies, we say goodbye to this year's series and hello to the Breeders' Cup as they load into the gate for this year's Coaltown Handicap!
