Welcome to the Preakness Stakes, the second jewel of the hallowed Triple Crown of American horse racing! At a sixteenth of a mile shorter than the Derby, the Preakness gives horses a bit of a breather before tackling the Belmont Stakes in three weeks. Prince of Thorns gutted out a win against his filly rival Athena Watchover, but only just; the winner of the Oaks is one tough filly, and there a number of new shooters just on the horizon prepared to wrench that crown away from him.

-------------------
Two weeks ago, we witnessed a battle of the titans - Athena Watchover, the 2 year old filly champion, fought tooth and nail against Prince of Thorns, the 2 year old male champion. Prince of Thorns prevailed by a hard fought length and Athena had to settle for second - but the daughter of Sent By Ares is back for more as the racing world turns to the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore, Maryland.
10 other colts and fillies have been entered against the two reigning champions of the 3 year old division, with many of the same faces from the Derby appearing once again in the Preakness. A number of new shooters have appeared on the horizon, including Oaks runners Chime and Sovenance, newcomer Voodoo and old hat Black Beauty returns after a spring layoff to take a shot at greatness. A sixteenth of a mile shorter than the Derby, the Preakness is often seen as a breather but with the amount of talent lined up against him, Prince of Thorns will have to be on top of his game to reach the wire first in a torrential downpour and sloppy track.
The race of the second jewel of the Triple Crown begins NOW!
