Three weeks ago, Heretic Queen has stamped herself the top sophomore dirt filly of the forum, rallying from off the pace in a slop-mired track to score her second victory in the Triple Tiara series. We move to Belmont Park for the shortest of the trio of races, the 1 mile Acorn Stakes that will make or break her Triple Tiara hopes. Her mother fell short two years ago - can Heretic Queen avenge her dam's loss and add that final and elusive jewel to a family of stars? With Songbird's score last year and Athena Watchover in 2015, we are drowning in Tiara riches - but one more never hurts.

Three weeks ago, Heretic Queen thundered past Mesmerize to roar to the wire in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes to snatch the second jewel of the Triple Tiara and earn her shot at immortality. Now at beautiful Belmont Park, seven fillies will line up for the final test - the 1 mile Acorn Stakes, the shortest of the series but also the trickiest. Not all fillies can handle the sweeping one turn mile and all but two have come up short when it really counted.
Today Rhapsody's Mesmerize is the narrow favorite after losing by less than two lengths to Heretic Queen last time out and looks to remedy that loss by toppling a champion. Heretic Queen is the obvious second choice, with Cursed a surprising third choice after an off the board finish at Pimlico. Both Cynic and Lady of Athens are co-fourth picks, with Lady of Athens finishing the best of the pair in the series and Cynic looking to regain her previous good form. Acrimony will try one last time at the big leagues, while Redeemed continues to flounder as the longest shot of them all in the series.
It's a gang of familiar faces and flying dirt as these seven fillies take to the track for the final filly spring classic. History is waiting - whether it is in the agony of the fallen or the immortality of the victor, it all comes down to 8 short furlongs on the main Belmont track.
