Race Replay
Two weeks ago, Illicit continued the female domination the Derby trail, grinding out a nail-biting victory over arch-rival Elysium in the Fountain of Youth Stakes. The spectular daughter of Royal Ransom is out to continue that streak and will be an even more formidable opponent today as the wind whips the track into a dustbowl with thunderstorms building on the horizon.
Illicit is once again the favorite today and she'll look to live up to that hype as she looks to score her second consecutive prep of the Derby trail. Damask won't be far behind, as the grey son of Vintage is the boys' best bet to finally win a race on the 2018 Derby trail, having come just strides away from victory. Lani is another colt that could have a shot at taking down the girls after a good showing last out in allowance company, while Elysium is fresh off an Oaks trail victory and looking to add another Derby prep to her already sparkling resume. Half-sister Djinn will look for her first victory on either side of the fence, as she'll press the pace as usual in hopes to force her sister into a pace meltdown that'll set it up for her or another stablemate. Good old General Disarray will round the field, as the full brother to Illicit shows none of his sister's talent, but has plenty of good humor to obligingly finish up the track so no one else has to.
The wind is roaring down the track to provide a nice tailwind for these colts and fillies once they round the final bend, and it'll be six of them to contest the dry, loess-like main track today as we buckle in for this year's Santa Anita Derby!
The Road to the Derby continues NOW on Seeing Stars!
