Race Replay
It's that time of year again as new foals gambol in the field and winter descends in earnest on the country. For all new minted three year olds, however, it means that the race is on for the coveted Crown of spring Classics, and today we embark on that journey with eight rough and ready colts and fillies all vying for a spot in the Kentucky Derby!
Dekada's powerhorse Cahokia Sky will lead the field by default, as the towering medicine-hat colt is hovering on the precipice of Grade I company after a grinding juvenile campaign. Hard Tack's 2 year old champ Horus, however, isn't far behind, and this dark bay son of a Triple Tiara and Epsom Derby winner has torn through allowance company in record time to thunder into open company. Stablemate Heathen hasn't done too bad for himself either, another son of both a Triple Crown and Triple Tiara winner that also does his best running on the front end but has shown a strange penchant for spitting the bit at inopportune times. Dekada's Cancer is yet another speedy colt that will try for the lead, having already garnered a number of G3 wins to his credit and several shots at the Breeders' Cup. Yokai isn't far behind in the betting and this eye-catching perlino colt will have ground to make up with his characteristic late flying run against the four speed horses in our field. Lavender Hill's Coco is already fresh off an Oaks prep score, and she'll be our fourth speed factor in today's Rebel, but can't count on the easy lead she got last out for a win this timee. Dead closer Game of Thrones will also have work to do here, having accomplished only a fraction of his stablemates' accolades and often finding himself at a disadvantage on off tracks. Toxic Bloom's Ray-Man is the longest shot on the board, and while he has come close in Open Level company, he's up against it today in talent.
It's a dreary day to start the Triple Tiara trail, with clouds low in the sky and threatening more rain that has turned our main track into a veritable dirt soup. That hasn't stopped these colts and filly from sparkling under the lights as they take to the track, and it'll be eight to load up into the gate for this year's Rebel Stakes!
