I. THE WESTFALEN IN SEEING STARS
Merge, a Matador substable, was the first barn in Seeing Stars to import the Westfalen breed. It began with four mares early in 2015 and recently acquired two stallions. Merge is honored to represent these beautiful, competitive horses in SS!
II. ABOUT THE WESTFALEN
The Westfalen, sometimes spelled Westphalian, hails from the Westphalia region of Germany. It is bred to the same caliber as other competitive German warmbloods, and shares many bloodlines with the Hanoverian and Rhinelander. The Westfalen primarily makes use of warmblood breeding stock, and so it is a heavier type than the more Thoroughbred and Arabian derived Trakehner. Still, the Westfalen is not a coarse breed, and is competitive at the top levels of show jumping, eventing, and dressage. Most Westfalen breeders strive to produce all rounders; a well-bred Westfalen is capable of taking you wherever you might need to go.
The breed registry has no color requirements or restrictions. Registered Westfalens are branded upon approval. The breed is abbreviated as WEST or WESTF.
III. REGISTRY RULES
All horses hexed from my Westfalen mods are required to be a Westfalen with a Westfalen brand. Horses from other Warmblood mods can become Westfalens after a "foal" inspection. For a foal to be inspected, simply PM me with a halter pose, and if the horse passes inspection, I will send you the paintball code for the brand, allowing you to brand your foal and call it a Westfalen. If you prefer, I can add the brand for you.
Please note that only certain warmblood mods are eligible to become Westfalens, and those with obvious conformation faults will be turned down.
Foals born from two Westfalen parents may be branded Westfalens. Foals born from one Westfalen parent and an approved parent may be branded Westfalens. Foals born from one Westfalen and an unapproved parent may still be eligible for approval and branding, but will need to go through the inspection process that other warmblood foals have to do.
Registered Westfalens will receive a registration certificate and a free In-Hand edit.
IV. STUDBOOK APPROVAL
The Westfalen Studbook includes all branded Westfalens and horses from other breeds that have been approved for breeding. The following are breeds that may be approved for the Book, and what is required of them:
-- GERMAN WARMBLOODS
---- Bavarian Warmblood
---- Hanoverian
---- Holsteiner
---- Oldenburg
---- Rhinelander
---- Trakehner
---- Wuerttemberg
---- Zweibruecher
-- German Warmbloods may be approved for Westfalen breeding by reaching Prix St. George in Dressage, Advanced in Eventing, or by attaining 30 points in Show Jumping. If you own a German Warmblood that has completed one of these achievements, congratulations! They are now capable of producing Westfalen registered foals!
-- THOROUGHBREDS
-- The Westfalen Registry is also open to outstanding Thoroughbred sires and dams. Thoroughbred stallions should be champed or the equivalent in two different disciplines. Thoroughbred mares have the same requirements as German Warmbloods.
V. BECOMING A BREEDER
I am more than happy to give my Westfalen mods to those of you who wish to become Westfalen breeders! You may acquire your first Westfalen by hexing directly from these mods, by getting a horse from a different WB mod approved, or by breeding one following the above guidelines.
VI. ACCEPTED MODS
Everyone is welcome to hex warmbloods, obviously! But for the sake of the registry, only certain mods will be accepted as "papered" and branded Westfalens. Horses from unaccepted mods--even mods made to be Westfalens--must go through the approval process like the usual warmblood. This might come across as kind of persnickety, but the entire reason I chose to dedicate Merge to the Westfalen registry is so that I could create this registry! I specifically chose a rather unpopular real life registry to do this with. If I hadn't wanted to do a registry, all of my horses would be Oldenburgs or Hanos.
Here are the current accepted mods:
- BASIC WESTFALEN: The first Westfalen mod for Merge! Originally created from my Warmblood file, I sought to create a versatile, structurally correct sport horse.
- EVENTING WESTFALEN: Originally hexed for my hexing contest. I created this file with eventing in mind; it's leaner, with a more upright neck.
- REVISED WESTFALEN: The newest Westfalen mod for Merge. Tried to create the best warmblood I could; hopefully I succeeded!
If you're interested in getting a mod accepted, let me know and let me check it out! I like a huge variety of hexing styles and I like for people to have options, but I do have some requirements for accepted mods. The most important part of a mod is that it represents the registry well; I'll be looking for correct conformation, a versatile frame, and a smooth, flowing outline. I've hexed my Westfalen mods to the best of my abilities, and I'll expect your potential accepted mods to be your best, too! Another VERY important part of accepted Westfalen mods is their availability; accepted mods are either readily accessible to all fileholders, or available to whoever might ask for it.
VII. MORE INFORMATION
This probably seems like a lot of weird rules, but I wanted to model the Westfalen Registry in SS as closely as I could to the real life registry! I wanted to have a warmblood breed that functions like a real warmblood breed. I chose a rather unusual warmblood registry for a few reasons: 1. I met a Westfalen once, and she was the biggest mare I've ever seen and she was so tall and athletic just looking at her made me weak in the knees, 2. There are no color restrictions, which makes for fun hexing, and 3. I could make a registry like this without stepping on any toes, which might've happened had I chosen to focus on Trakes, Hanos, or Oldenburgs! Obviously no one is required to take part in the Westfalen Registry, but if it appeals to you, I hope the realism adds a bit of fun to SS WB breeding!
I would LOVE to be able to maintain an up to date studbook for the registry, so if you own a Westfalen, I would appreciate a photo of it, as well as its name and gender and any other misc info (discipline specialties, whether it'll be available for breeding in the future, etc), in my inbox! =3
