Race Replay
Two weeks ago, it started to look like 2020 will be the year of the upsets, as Under The Mask charged to the lead and stayed there, leaving enough in the tank to hold off the tremendous rally of stablemate Girl Gone Wild. Both fillies are back this week against a field of familiar foes, as the sun finally cracks the clouds on the East Coast for this year's Las Virgenes Stakes!
2 Year Old Filly champ Girl Gone Wild is the favorite once again despite a pair of runner up finishes in our Oaks preps, but she's still showing all the signs of her juvenile form with bad luck thrown into the mix. Coco, winner of the Silverbulletday, is second choice after a series of in the money finishes in open stakes and looks to avenge her fifth place finish in the Davona Dale. Pretty little Buchiko has had her share of bad luck this season, running against both juvenile champs in all of her sophomore starts, but has acquitted herself well in the Oaks trail with a pair of thirds to show. Under The Mask was our last upset winner with a free on the lead run and looks to repeat that performance today, with similar tactics if she can get away cleanly. Flashy Dapper Doll is fifth on the board despite a series of uninspiring finishes in allowance company, but she has shown promise and bettors are looking to be rewarded with another show today. Groupie Doll is sixth on the line and while she has yet to win in her last half dozen starts, she has managed a series of credible fourth place finishes in allowance company that show some of her buried ability. Mary Lou is right there with her and has galloped into a series of wins and on the board finishes in allowance company to become one of the best longshots on the board. Duchess hasn't fared as well as her stablemate in recent races, sliding along on a dozen race skid where her best finish has been a third in allowance company. Gracie is the longest shot of all and may be in over her head, despite some promise as a juvenile that has all but disappeared as she's made the transition to three.
Spring is finally in the air on the east coast as the temperature climbs into the upper 50s and the fillies are feeling frisky as they take to the main dirt course. Nine will contest this week's points extravaganza for the Oaks, but only one filly can come out on top. It's time for this year's Las Virgenes Stakes!
The Road to the Oaks continues NOW on Seeing Stars!
