Race Replay
A week ago, we had a double feature of colts and fillies as Minx and Yokai both set stakes records in the Prix La Force and Prix Finlande, respectively, against their own sex. Today, only Minx returns for a debut against the boys on the turf as we open our first open company race on the British turf in this year's Feilden Stakes!
Grey Illusion has the crowd's eye today after several tremendous races in the past couple weeks, missing out on victory by the slimmest of margins with a slice of bad luck. Thistle is close behind after several good showings in graded stakes, and she has shown an affinity to turf in her recent outings, boding well for her chances here today. Mokuso has already won once against colts on the Guineas trail this year, and as only one of two pacesetters today, there's a good chance he'll run off to his favorite spot, far in front and all by his lonesome. Goldikova will gladly give chase as this late-running filly has proven with her facile ability that she doesn't fear big fields and can find the smallest of holes to sneak through for the win. Bandit has shown a similar ability, but the long-legged colt has preferred the outside to the inside in past starts and may be compromised by his rail draw. Checkers has seen his odds drop after a fast-closing second last out, and with a promotion into graded company, this flashy black and white boy may find the longer turf oval to his liking. Minx is higher up on the board today despite her last-out win, but she's faltered a bit in open company in the past and is somewhat of a question mark against males. War Axe is nearly double digits despite several allowance victories, but he's done his best running as the sole speed and may be up against it even with one more front runner in the field. Lucille is double digits and has shown some ability, with some question marks, however, over a route of ground like today. Sabino Intuition is the longest shot on the board and while she has yet to make an impact on this year's classics, she always throws it onto the turf and runs her little legs off.
The storms of the weekend are but a memory as bright blue and fluffy white dominate the sky over the East Coast, with spring temperatures soaring as we march closer to the first weekend in May. It's a beautiful day and with these ten tenacious colts and fillies sparkling in counterpoint to the clear sky, it's a picture perfect scene for this year's Feilden Stakes!
