Race Replay
Two weeks ago, 2 year old champ Horus finally broke through on the Derby trail, eclipsing his relative's stake record by a tenth of a second only a neck in front of tenacious filly Coco. Today, these two are back for more, along with six other hard-bitten warriors as we move one step closer to the roses in this year's Santa Anita Derby!
Coco is the favorite today after a front running score in the Ashland, and she's proven she's tough to beat on the front end when she's throw into a fight. Heathen will be co-favorite with her today despite a fourth last time out, but he's already won twice on the Derby trail plus several other graded stakes in a massive show of talent. Horus isn't far behind and the towering son of Tiara winner Heretic Queen will look to make it back to back victories between his two frontrunning rivals. Yokai is fourth choice after several close calls in the British Trials, and a breakthrough in grade 2 company last out. Leggy Thistle will look to continue her upswing after a fast-closing fourth in the Ashland, and with several victories under her belt already in the season, she's set up to run well agains the boys. Checkers is on a skid but has shown marked improvement as of late, running in the money in his last several starts to graduate into the graded ranks. Mary Lou is a question mark here after several subpar efforts in allowance company, but her fifth in the Ashland may be better than it looked. Intuition is the longshot by a country mile, but with her own PPs showing an uptick in her last few races, she may have a live chance to get a piece of it today.
The storms of the weekend are but a memory as bright blue and fluffy white dominate the sky over the East Coast, with spring temperatures soaring as we march closer to the first Saturday in May. It's a beautiful day and with these eight tenacious colts and fillies sparkling in counterpoint to the clear sky, it's a picture perfect scene for this year's Santa Anita Derby!
