Race Replay
Two weeks ago, Horus took his second Derby prep in a row, running off with the lead and never relinquishing it in a battle to the wire with stablemate Heathen. Today, Horus is back against rivals new and old in the FINAL Derby prep of the year as our 11 colts and fillies throw it all on the line in this year's Wood Memorial!
Coco is the favorite today after making it three in a row on the Oaks trail, but Horus won't be far behind as the stage is set for these two to battle it out to the finish as two front-running demons. Heathen is the third wheel in this war despite winning two already on the Derby trail, but he may just benefit if Coco and Horus run each other into the ground. Thistle will be another one tracking these pacesetters closely, hoping for a pace meltdown, while Yokai will take his shot from further back, and may find himself up against it with the largest field of the season in front of him. Mary Lou is on the up and up after a sparkling showing in recent allowance company, while the grey ghost Riot returns from a layoff to make his first appearance on the Derby trail to make his patented late run at the leaders. Rash is the final of our front running quartet, but his habit of slow breaks can work against him in his current company. Checkers has shown his flashes of brilliance, most recently in a surprise score in the Blue Riband Trial on turf but has yet to show that form on dirt and especially on the Derby trail. Gracie is double digits and will need to dig deep to find a place in this salty field, while Intuition is the longest shot of all against the best the forum has to offer.
It's been a wet and wild spring, with thunderstorms ravaging the area just the night prior, leaving the track a muddy mess and one that may work against many of our runners today. It may be a battle against the elements as the clouds close in again, but our 11 colts and fillies will have to race against the clock and each other to find that wire first before the skies open up in this year's Wood Memorial!
The Road to the Kentucky Derby ENDS NOW on Seeing Stars!
