Race Replay
A week ago, Checkers sprung the biggest upset on the trial stage so far, storming home at odds of 6-1 to outrun the field in stakes record time. The black and white colt is back for more this week, and he'll have one more chance to prove he belongs in the English Classics, as we are down to our FINAL trial on the road to the guineas, the Sandown Classic!
Illusion is today's favorite after last week's abscence, and with two consecutive Grade II placings under his girth, he looks the part of a champion as he heads the post parade. Mokuso, already a dual winner on the Classics trail, will look to make it a hat trick with his front running speed and has already defeated Illusion twice in graded company, including his last state. Riot is a newcomer on the Guineas trail but he boasts a stout pedigree on the turf with his dam winning twice on the grass in Dubai and his grandmother an Eclipse winning turf specialist. War Axe is back for more after a trouncing last week, and he'll have to get away clean to outrun his stablemate for that coveted lead. Bandit is another winner in the trials and has done well for himself in graded company, most recently finishing third behind Mokuso and Illusion. Checkers is even longer odds today than when he won last week, and that win may be an abberation based on his most recent, head-scratching form. Minx is mixing it up with males again after a let down last week, while Goldikova will look to improve on an uncharacteristic last place finish in her previous trial. Lucille is double digits and the longest shot on the board, but she's shown some improvement in allowance company and may be on the upswing as we head into the peak of the season.
It's been a wild ride on the trials trail, winding our way through the European and English countryside to pick out the best of the best turf horses on the Continent. It's a final tally of nine that will make it into the stalls today, as some of the brightest and fastest of all the grass specialsts converge on the final race of the Guineas road - the Sandown Classic!
The Road to the Classics ENDS NOW on Seeing Stars!
