Welcome to the (late) spring Chincoteague Foal Sale or Pony Penning Auction, where a few of our wonderful foals are up for auction! These special little ladies and dudes have quite a history behind them so if you win one, you’re taking home a part of North American heritage!
If you’re a horse fan from America, you’ve probably heard of Misty of Chincoteague; a brave little mare who was bought by loving children, having swam from Assateague to Chincoteague Island where she was auctioned off. This is all based off of a real pony, and real life events. You can even see her petz counterpart in Hard Tack stables!
Every year the Chincoteague Firemen herd the wild horses of Assateague Island into the channel where they swim to Chincoteague Island – off the coast of Virginia - and foals are auctioned off to the public. This raises money for the firemen and controls the pony population, which is where penning began; as a way to herd, brand, and tame wild herds. Since its beginnings in 1925, Pony Penning Day has continued to grow and benefit the small islands and is comprised of 3 Penning Days a year. A spring round-up, the official Pony Penning in July, and a late round-up in early fall for those last minute foals. Keep an eye out for a large Pony Penning event after the Olympics!
No one quite knows the history of Chincoteague ponies, but one popular theory is that they’re descendants of Spanish Arabians who swam ashore after a shipwreck. Not becoming a recognized breed until 1994, the Chincoteague pony is a small and hardy horse that lives off a diet of marsh grasses. Once tamed for riding, these pony make wonderful companions or partners in the show ring! Now they’re coming to you!
*The hexed horses are based off of real wild Chincoteague ponies*
Thanks to Jewellz and Neco for all their help!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is going to be run a little bit differently so make sure you pay attention!
As foals are auctioned off in the real life counterpart, you will receive a foal to keep in tradition, but feel free to age them up or raise them naturally. Up to you! *Adult pictures of foals provided below*
Also! There is typically a buyback pony, which is a pony auctioned off to return back to Assateague and live out its life in the wild. As we don’t have a wild, the highest bidder will receive another foal free of charge to continue Chincoteague bloodlines in their own stables. I will PM the winner and we will discuss this so we make sure you get what you want.
Rules:
- Prefix/suffix is NOT required, feel free to use your own!
- You may bid on 1 horse
