Race Replay
Summer has finally arrived on the dreary heels of spring, and the sun is sparkling in a cloudless sky above Newmarket as we gear up for the biggest 3yo turf race of the year! 13 grass specialists will clash today in the first jewel of the turf Triple Crown, and with all of them so evenly matched, we're in for a heck of a horse race when the stalls open!
Mokuso will lead the betting parade today, after several sparkling trial victories showcasing his deadly speed have catapulted him to the top of the turf ranks. Cancer is only a few points behind, however, and he's another speedy horse that loves the lead and will run them off their feet, given a chance. Dapper Doll is a tick back as third choice, and while she hasn't won a trial on either side of the pond, she's done well for herself on the grass. Under THe Mask will look to join the front runner party and while she has struggled to regain her early season form, she is no slouch and one to watch. Bandit has already shown his fortitude on the grass, but a flat mile is a question mark he'll need to answer decisively today. Checkers was a stunner of a winner in our final pre-Guineas trial, splitting horses to blow them away at the wire, but he has yet to duplicate that performance. Thistle, winner of the 1000 Guineas, will look to make it a twofer and become the first horse to win both races. Yokai is another winner trial winner looking to put an exclamation mark on his spring season, after a disappointing run on the dirt in the Triple Crown. Illusion is double digits despite a sparkling race record, while Riot is clocking in for a boost on the grass after a subpar effort on the dirt in the Kentucky Derby. Gracie is right there with him after her own disappointing run for the lillies, and Goldikova is a longshot despite her facile scores on the grass, including several close finishes in the trials. Intution is the longest shot we've ever had in a race, but the little filly that tries never gives up and has shown promise in her last several races.
With the sun sparkling on their backs and the tack polished to gleaming, it's 13 colts and fillies to take to the grass for battle - the battle for the first jewell of the turf Triple Crown!
