Race Replay
A week ago, Mokuso broke mid-field and looked hopelessly beaten, but rallied in the final furlong to hold off a cavalry charge to win the 2000 Guineas! He's back today for another trial and another chance to cement his status as the top turf sophomore colt on the forum, as only five line up for this year's Lingfield Derby Trial!
Hard Tack's Mokuso is the rightful favorite today after a gutsy performance in the 2000 Guineas, but he looks vulnerable after a disappointing run in the Olympics against older horses. Bandit is second choice and while he had a similar struggle in Tokyo, he did finish second to Mokuso in the Guineas, and has shown his talent in recent allowance company between stakes appearances. Hard Tack's War Axe is back again after winning his first graded stakes and while he didn't appear in the Guineas, he's back for more in the trials in an attempt to dethrone his stablemate. Lavender Hill's Illusion reappears after a seventh place finish in the Guineas and he's looking for redemption after failing to fire in both of his Olympic races. Checkers rounds out the field after finishing 11th of 12 in the Guineas, and he'll try to swing his luck back the other way in this smaller field.
Wild thunderstorms tore through the area last night, but the sun is shining and the heat has dried out the turf track to pristine condition as our five colts make their way onto the grass. With the 2000 Guineas winner standing tall in a small field of five, Mokuso will still have to fight for his crown as they load into the gate for this year's Lingfield Derby Trial!
