Race Replay
Last week, Tipsy mowed down reigning Kentucky Oaks victress Coco in a heart-stopping come from behind sweep, sealing her spot in the upcoming Breeders' Cup Distaff. This week, another nearly full field loads into the gate for their shot at a plane ticket to Keeneland in this year's Busher Handicap!
Coco is the heavy favorite today and she's out for redemption and revenge after fellow entrant Under The Mask denied her the Triple Tiara in the Acorn just a week ago. Mesmerize will follow as second choice after a strong rally that fell only a few lengths short in the Personal Ensign, while co-second favorite Mary Lou will look to build up on a resume that has recently seen her hit the board in several graded stakes. Two year old filly champ Girl Gone Wild is back on track after missing the first round of Breeders' Cup challenges, and a well-rest Wildie is a dangeous filly on a fast track. Duchess ran a surprising third in the Personal Ensign behind the big two, but she's a filly that's fast developing into a fine distaffer and she's rounding into form at the right time. Dapper Doll won the Epsom Oaks at 12 furlongs on the turf, and while her dirt record is less than stellar, many others have made the jump in the BC when it counts. The rest of the field jumps into double digits with Acorn victress Under The Mask, who recently ran second behind Dapper Doll in the Epsom Oaks and is regaining her early spring form at the peak time. Djinn hasn't had the best of seasons as a four year old, but with less speed in the field, and an inside position, she'll have an easy time clearing the field and running straight to the front as is her preference. Chiricahua has the breeding for the Breeders' Cup, by Classic winner Barbaro, and returns off a long layoff to take a huge jump in class. Tokyo medalist Buchiko is far down the betting totem pole today after several uncharacteristic subpar efforts and she'll have to really pick it up to prove she belongs in elite company again. Gracie is the longest shot on the board and while she has had some success overseas, her US record is sorely lacking and she may be in over her head today.
A hurricane is bearing down on the East Coast just mere hours down the shore, but the sun is still fighting valiantly against the approaching thunderheads as we open the track for today's races! With 12 fillies taking to the track like glittering jewels, it'll be a race against time, the elements and each other to earn that second coveted spot for this year's Breeders' Cup Distaff.
The Road to the Breeders' Cup continues NOW on SS!
