Race Replay
Last week, 2020 Kentucky Derby/Preakness winner Horus made up for his Belmont miss with a front running score in the Secretariat, holding off 2018 Triple Crown winner Pagan in a duel to the wire as those two Derby winners refused to bend. Today, Pagan returns for another shot at the Breeders' Cup along with 12 other hopefuls as we take to the main track for this year's Tiznow Handicap!
Pagan is the heavy favorite today after only missing by a neck in the Secretariat and earning several medals in Tokyo, including a jaw dropping Classic performance that saw him beat the best of the forum. Oaks winner Coco will be hot on his heels after already earning a spot in the Distaff and she'll try to use her speed to outflank and outrun the Triple Crown winner for another spot in the BC. 2019 Preakness winner Damask will look for those two to run each other into the ground and pick up the pieces at the end, using that tactical speed of his to get the jump on the rest of the field. It's a big jump to Tokyo medalist Heathen, who held on for fourth in the Tiznow and struck his own triple crown of medals in Tokyo to make him one of the most decorated sophomores on the forum. Dubai World cup winner Virgo is back for more after a long layoff and will look to set his speed against the newest generation on the track, after missing out on the Olympics earlier in the summer. Yokai is next on the board after an up and down season on both turf and dirt, and he'll look to catch a break with an inside post and a shorter way around the oval. Speedball Cancer will try to outrun everyone of the gate, as is his penchant, while stablemate Girl Gone Wild will sit back and find a way through this large field with the fleetness of foot that earned her 2 Year Old Eclipse honors. Tipsy already bullied her way into the Breeders' Cup with a spot in the Distaff and she'll try her luck against the boys with that same late running tactic. It's another huge jump in odds to Under The Mask, winner of hte Acorn Stakes and second in the Epsom Oaks, along with Checkers and Styx, two colts that have had their ups this season, but have run into bad luck time and again when it comes to trips and the level of competition. Mary Lou is the longest shot of all and while she shone briefly in Tokyo, her star has been guttering and she will need to bring every ounce of talent she has to make an impact against this field.
A hurricane is bearing down on the East Coast just mere hours down the shore, but the sun is still fighting valiantly against the approaching thunderheads as we open the track for today's races! With 12 fillies taking to the track like glittering jewels, it'll be a race against time, the elements and each other to earn that second coveted spot for this year's Breeders' Cup Classic.
The Road to the Breeders' Cup continues NOW on SS!
