A month ago, it was Thistle who stunned a field of sophomore fillies, duking it out with Goldikova from the quarter pole to the wire in a slugfest of a finish in the 1000 Guineas. A short field lines up to take her on in the second leg of the British Triple Tiara, with the 12 furlongs of the Epsom Oaks looming as the greatest threat to all of our turf specialists - the longest they've had to run so far in the classic series.
Dapper Doll is the favorite today after several promising finishes in her most recent starts, though the second to last finish in the 1000 Guineas cannot be overlooked when trying to handicap her form. It's a three way tie for second choice with Guineas winner Thistleleading the trio and the one with a bullseye on her flank after her gusty performance in the Guineas. Under The Mask will be next in line after an upset victory in the Acorn Stakes on dirt, upending a Triple Tiara and possibly waiting to do the same here to try and become one of the few summer classic winners on turf and dirt. Minx won the Chester Vase last out and that puts her in good position today, as this is a filly that likes to go long, but she'll have little pace to run into with only Under The Mask as our pacesetter. Brazen was second in the Chester Vase and a fast closing one at that, which puts this filly on the radar despite her light Trial seasoning. Gracie rounds out the field as the longest shot ont he board, but not by a much as this full-sister to Dapper Doll won her own Trial two starts back against a short field and could pull the upset today against another small group.
A hurricane is bearing down on the East Coast just mere hours down the shore, but the sun is still fighting valiantly against the approaching thunderheads as we open the track for today's races! With six fillies taking to the track like glittering jewels, it'll be a race against time, the elements and each other to earn that coveted spot in history as this year's winner of the second leg of the British Triple Crown.
