The Epsom Derby is run at Epsom Downs over a distance of 1 mile, 4 furlongs (12F) on the first Saturday of June each year. It is Britain's richest horse race, and the most prestigious of the five Classics. It is sometimes referred to as the "Blue Riband" of the turf. The name "Derby" has become synonymous with great races all over the world, and as such has been borrowed many times, notably by the Kentucky Derby in the United States. The Derby run at Epsom is the original and in Great Britain is invariably referred to as "the Derby".
This race serves as the second leg to the (British) Triple Crown, preceded by the 2000 Guineas (8F) and followed by the St Leger (13F), though the feat of winning all three is rarely attempted.

Race Replay
A month ago, it was Mokuso who led the way for sophomore turf-specialists as the brilliant red son of Vain and Shizuka rallied from the middle of the field to score decisively in the 2000 Guineas. He's been on a tear since through the trials, but ran off the board in his last start in the Chester Vase - opening it up for the rest of the field to be the one to take the storied Epsom Derby if he can't get it together again today.
Mokuso will lead the betting again today despite his off the board finish in the Chester Vase and he is still the one to watch after a series of victories throughout the spring season. Turn & Burn's Bandit is second choice and nearly upended Mokuso in the 2000 Guineas, closing from the back of the field to breathe down Mokuso's neck at the wire, something he is more than capable of doing again today. Ghostly Yokai is third choice and he'll have plenty of time to get himself in good position to get a piece of the Derby if he can find that kick that won him several stakes as a juvenile. War Axe has had some near misses this season during the trials, but has yet to make the grade and will need a clean break to get that coveted solo lead he needs. Checkers has scored once on the Trials trail and ran a fast-closing third in the Belmont Stakes at the 12 furlong distance, but the turf is a question mark and he has yet to string together back to back successes. We jump to the double digits with Acorn victress Under The Mask, who faltered in the 2000 Guineas but dominated fillies on the dirt and held on for a gusty third in the 1000 Guineas. Riot is new to the Classic scene and hasn't had much success but the hard-trying colt could still make an impact with a pace meltdown up front. Brazen ran a phenomenal second in her first Trial try, and while she's long odds today, she's done more than well for herself over her short career and will try to build on that sucess today. 1000 Guineas winner Thistle is the longest shot on the board, despite dominating her peers in the early spring classic and several other on the board finishes in between.
A hurricane is bearing down on the East Coast just mere hours down the shore, but the sun is still fighting valiantly against the approaching thunderheads as we open the track for today's races! With nine colts and fillies taking to the track like glittering jewels, it'll be a race against time, the elements and each other to earn that coveted spot in history as this year's winner of the second leg of the British Triple Crown.
