A week ago, War Axe stormed to a record breaking victory in the Epsom Derby to dash any hopes of a Triple Crown, while Dapper Doll stunned the field in the Epsom Oaks just a race prior. Dapper Doll is absent today, but War Axe is back to fight for his spot as a top turf sophomore against seven other rivals as we line them up for this year's Queen's Vase!
Turn & Burn's Bandit is the favorite today after a strong showing in both the Epsom Derby and the Breeders' Cup preps, running a pair of seconds behind top flight horses in both. Eight Seconds is new to the Trial trail, but he's a big threat with his sharp breaks and tactical speed that can put him way ahead of the field and into a spot where no one can catch him. Epsom Derby winner War Axe is third choice but still a strong contender to notch his second race in a row after a dominating Derby performance. Checkers is another horse that's won a Trial in this year, but it's looking that it may be a fluke after failing to hit in the board in his last several races. Minx won her own race in the Chester Trial and while she wasn't a factor in the Epsom Oaks, she has the ability to cross out that race and come back strongly today. Brazen finished a surprising second to Minx in the Chester and she's proven that's no accident, as she's already a graded stakes winner and ran second in her most recent start. Gracie tries as much as the next horse and gives Turn & Burn three Trial winners in as many runners, but she has yet to come close to that performance again. Firebrand is the longest shot on the board in double digits and while she does have sveral minor stakes wins, she is over her head today and will need a hot, contested pace to make an impact.
It's a hot and humid Friday with the sun making sporadic appearances behind heavy clouds, and the threat of rain is starting to loom as our field steps onto the turf. With eight colts and fillies lining up today for the penultimate trial before the coveted St. Leger, we can only hope that the skies hold off and the turf remains firm as they load up for this year's Queen's Vase!
The Road to the St. Leger continues NOW on Seeing Stars!
