Race Replay
In last week's Dahlia Stakes, Accendere led from gate to wire to score her spot in the BC Turf, but she had to dig deep for that victory as Queen's Vase winner Bandit nearly ran her down in the shadow of the wire with a tremendous rally. Bandit is back again today to try and finally break out of his seconditis, and with only five other rivals to consider, it may just be his day as we line them up for this year's Orfevre Handicap!
It's a pair of co favorites today with Cabaal leading the way, with the late-running son of Vegas Vixen already sporting a silver medal from Tokyo after just missing catching his dam in the Marathon. He shortens up today while Dyllinger sticks to his wheelhouse, after run a solid fourth last out in the Dahlia and closing like a freight train in that race. Newly minted Grade 2 runner Eight Seconds is one of three speed horses and he'll come in off a third place finish in the Queen's Vase, where he set the pace but couldn't hold off the rally of Bandit in the stretch. Bandit is the fourth choice today after that score and his second place finish in the Dahlia, and this rapidly improving colt is a real danger to our top favorites as 12 furlongs seems to be his favorite distance. 2000 Guineas winner Mokuso stretches out and has thus far been unsuccessful in his journey for a Breeders' Cup berth, having set the pace but ultimately fading in each race. Under The Mask completes our speed trifecta and while the Acorn winner hasn't shown as much talent at longer distances, she does have speed to carry her and if she can break quickly, she can easily outdistance the field.
The storms have come and gone, but the torrential rains have left our turf course a slippery, squishy mess with a love for soft going a requirement as our six gleaming colts and filly take to the grass. They won't be shining for long with the amount of kickback expected, and it'll be a toss up today on who can handle the soft ground and who can't as they battle to the wire for that last coveted spot in this year's BC Turf!
