Race Replay
In last week's Spectacular Bid, it was Dubai World Cup winner Virgo who took the field gate to wire in an easy front running victory over a stellar field, leaving Oaks victress Coco to finish second for once in this topsy turvy season. Coco returns with a vengeance after losing her bid at the Triple Tiara and she has her sights set on the Breeders' Cup, along with eight other rivals as we line them up on the main track in this year's Cigar Handicap!
Coco leads the field today and with the track a sloppy mess, speed has a big chance to carry the day and this three time Grade I winner has speed to spare in spades and loves an off going. Heathen will try to snatch that lead from her with an inside post and while the colt is quick out of the gate, he'll have to clear not only Coco but Under The Mask in a two pronged attack for the front. It's a big jump to Mary Lou, who figures to settle in behind all those front runners, while Checkers will do his running from the back of the field, in a quick burst that saw him win a British Trial, but not much else. It's another step to Artegal, our second dead closer who has a big tendency to outrun his odds and rivals with a devestating turn of foot. Two Year Old filly champ Girl Gone Wild ran a fast closing second in the Go For Wand earlier on the card and she's showing her own love of the mud with her solid finishes. Acorn winner Under The Mask is our third speedball in our field and with a middle of the road post, she can keep her eye on both Heathen and Coco as they slug it out for the front end. Duchess jumps us to double digits off a subpar spring and summer campaign and Styx is the longest shot of all at over double her price, having shown little this year compared to his previous season.
The storms have come and gone, but the torrential rains have left our main dirt track a slippery mess with a love for mud a requirement as our nine gleaming colts and fillies take to the slop. They won't be shining for long with the amount of muddy kickback expected, and it'll be a toss up today on who can handle the slop and who can't as they battle to the wire for that last coveted spot in this year's BC Classic!
