Race Replay
It's a new week and a new round of Breeders' Cup preps! We start our series off this week with the ladies of the turf, as eight fillies and mares line up for a shot at the Filly & Mare Turf in this year's Ouija Board Stakes!
Hard Tack's Palenque leads the parade and the flashy palomino mare is on her toes after a months-long layoff, having last raced in Dubai and finishing off the board. She'll have to fight for that lead against her own daughter Under The Mask, this year's Acorn Oaks victress and a multiple graded stakes winner that has already proved her mettle against the best of this generation and beyond. 1000 Guineas winner Thistle will join the fray and figures to sit behind those two speed horses, with stablemate and Olympic medalist Vice Versa figuring to be right there with her as these two mares love to stalk a fast pace. Splashy Gracie will have work to do today to play catch up with this caliber of field, but she has been on the upswing lately after a disappointing first half of the year. Djinn is our third speed horse of the field and closest to the rail, which could work out well for her with her sharp gate speed and turn of foot that's seen her speed to the lead and leave the field stumbling in her wake. Minx does her best running late as seen in the British Trials across the pond, but as the only G3 horse in the field, she'll have to really step it up to prove she belongs with these types of mares. Chiricahua is the longest shot at double digits and despite a surprising second on dirt in the Distaff preps, she hasn't proved much this season yet and will need to be on her best behavior to make an impact against this field.
Thunderstorms are rolling in fast and it's a race against the weather and the clock as our eight sparkling fillies and mares are bundled onto the turf course. Rain has already soaked the course earlier in the day and with some give in the grass, that may just be enough to give some of our competitors an edge as we line them up for this year's Ouija Board Stakes!
