Race Replay
Last week saw Palenque wire the field in a scintillating performance, with the palomino mare kicking well clear of her rivals in the final furlong to waltz to the wire unopposed. Today, it's a cutback to 9 furlongs and a drop to only seven fillies and mares contesting the grass, with only two spots left for a free trip to the Breeders' Cup in November!
Rhapsody's Vice Versa is once more the favorite and maybe third time's the charm, after the bay filly had to settle for a distant second to Palenque in last week's Flawlessly. She's shown a fiery kick in her last few races, but she'll have to contend with Epsom Oaks winner Dapper Doll, who shows a similar turn of foot and rallied within biting distance last week to snag that show spot. Brazen has been rocketing through the ranks like no one's business, missing only by the narrowest of margins in the final British Trial and scoring big in graded stakes across the forum. Triple Tiara veteran Djinn is one of only two speed horses in the field and though she's been shuffled back in previous races, with that coveted rail spot she may have the advantage and she's got speed to use it. Gracie has been on a surprising upswing lately and after finishing in the back of the field last out, she'll have ground to make up on her rivals if she wants to keep that trend going. Chiricahua is another that's shown promise but has disappointed in her last several starts, while Kyoto Kitten is a new face on the BC scene and another speedball, one that has used her quick breaks and sharp speed to run many a rival into the ground.
The sun has been shining like it's still the heart of summer and even as the temperatures begin to drop at night, it hasn't cooled off during the day and the turf course is solid after two straight weeks of soggy grass. Our seven fabulous fillies and mares are sure to appreciate the clear skies and firm going, and it'll be an even playing field this week as we line them up for this year's Memories of Silver Stakes!
