Race Replay
Last week saw Warpaint take his second Sadlers Wells Handicap in a row, running down stablemate Accendere with his signature grinding style and securing his spot in the Marathon. Accendere returns and after two straight runner up finishes, she's desperate for that breakthrough with only spots left for this year's Breeders' Cup!
Rhapsody's Accendere is once more the favorite after scoring a big gold medal in Tokyo, and while she hasn't run badly in the BC preps by any means, she needs to dig into that mettle that won her the gold. Secret Silence makes her BC debut and is a co-favorite with Accendere, with a stalker running style a complement and one that may serve her well behind the speedy Accendere. Grey Pyrite is third choice and has shown himself tough enough against this company with a hard charging fifth last out, less than three lengths off the winner at the wire. Dead closer Unrequited will need to get her game face on after stalling out last week, and with an inside post, that may just been the edge she needs to use that grinding stamina of hers to eke out a victory. Eight Seconds is back for more after finishing a good third last out and he could be the one to upset Accendere, as he can break fast and run far off on that lead. Daella is the far outside and for a stalker, that could spell disaster as she'll need to break sharply, never a strong point of hers, and hustle into position behind Accendere to secure her best running room. Veramente Neve, last year's winner, is a huge jump to double digits and the longest shot on the board, with a last place finish so far on her BC resume that she'll have to run hard to blot out.
The sun has been shining like it's still the heart of summer and even as the temperatures begin to drop at night, it hasn't cooled off during the day and the turf course is solid after two straight weeks of soggy grass. Our seven stalwart mares and stallions are sure to appreciate the clear skies and firm going, and it'll be an even playing field this week as we line them up for this year's Yeats Stakes!
