Race Replay
Last week saw Overdraft end his streak of 2nd place finishes with a decisive score over a fast-closing cavalry charge to punch his ticket to the Breeders' Cup. Today, six are left to fight over that final free spot to the Breeders' Cup Sprint and it's anyone's race as this evenly matched field heads to the post for this year's Gulch Handicap!
Midgard's Cancer leads the way in terms of favoritism today, and this talented buckskin stallion has had a banner year so far, steamrolling his competition in the Olympics to qualify for several races and winning graded stakes in between. Flashy Mary Lou is only a beat behind in the betting, and she's shown a stunning reversal of form as of late, flying in to finsh second last out and winning a Grade 2 stakes with ease. Acorn winner Under The Mask is back and she'll try once more for a free trip to the Breeders' Cup, and figures to be part of an expected speed duel up front with her stablemate and Hells Bells from Hard Tack. Duchess is higher up the betting chain but she's also shown an uptick in form, and seems to be finally putting it all together as her sophomore season draws to a close. Vetern Hells Bells is the most experienced of all, and it looks like it's been taking a toll on the stalwart warhorse, as he has finished out of the money in his last two Breeders' Cup preps and may be winding down after scoring a bronze in Tokyo. Groupie Doll is the longest shot of all, but not by much and she's in her favorite spot on the outside, which may bode well for her chances on grabbing a piece of it, after failing to fire in her last couple races.
The temperature has taken a decided drop on the East Coast, but it's the weather all horses and racing fans love, with clear blue skies and balmy breezes that keep the flies off and the heat down. With only six to contest this final prep for the Breeders' Cup Sprint, it's time for our boys and girls to throw it all down on the track with one last battle for the winner's circle. It's time to let em roll in the Gulch Handicap!
